Enviro-Crime

Bedford Borough Council are focusing on tackling the main enviro-crimes, i.e. environmental offences that affect our Borough such as fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, graffiti and flyposting. Enviro-crime offences are criminal offences.

The main aims of the initiative are:

  • to reduce fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, graffiti and flyposting in Bedford Borough
  • to raise awareness of these offences by campaigns and enforcement
  • to change attitudes and behaviour by highlighting that these offences as socially unacceptable

In exercising any of its enforcement duties, Bedford Borough Council adheres to its Environment & Sustainability Communities Enforcement Policy. This document has been prepared with having regard to the Enforcement Concordat (introduced by the Government in 1998); and the Principles of Good Enforcement which are: Standards, Openness, Helpfulness, Complaints, Proportionality and Consistency.

Reporting an Environmental Criminal Offence

If you see an environmental criminal offence being committed and wish to report it, you will need to provide as much information as you can, which could be used as evidence and may enable us to prosecute. This can include but is not limited to:

  • A description of the offender & offence
  • A vehicle registration (if relevant)
  • Photographic evidence

You can remain anonymous, but without your help it will be more difficult to prosecute offenders. Your personal details will be treated as confidential but it may sometimes be necessary for witnesses to give evidence in court.Bedford LCS logo
