Capital Funding

Bedford Borough Council has submitted a bid to the Department for Transport for funding (Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Bid) to enable the authority to carry out improvements works to street lighting. To view a copy of the bid application, please click the link below:

The Council is responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of some but not all streetlights on the road network.
Town and Parish Councils can also own streetlights as can District Councils.
Highway lighting owned and maintained by Bedford Highways will have a white plastic plate attached which gives details of who to contact if there is a problem with the light.
If you do not know who owns a particular streetlight then contact us and we will let you have the information from our database. We will also be able to give you details of who to contact, or even contact them for you

How do I report a problem?

To report problems with street lights, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings or illuminated bollards please email the Highways Helpdesk or complete the on-line form. If you are reporting problems with temporary traffic lights at roadwork sites, please provide us with as much information as possible so that we can chase the relevant owner.

The street light outside my house is out/is faulty

Please email the Highways Helpdesk or complete the online form to let us know - the more information you can give us the better (i.e. light out altogether, going on/off, burning all day, intermittent etc.), include the number of the column - if you cannot see this then please state the exact location or adjacent house no.
How long will it take to repair?

Streetlighting faults - 10 working days from the date of our reply. If there is a problem on the electricity cable feeding the column, notification is sent to the Utility who usually attend within 28 days of receiving the report. Unfortunately the utility who owns the supply cables have a monopoly on their services, therefore their service levels cannot always be ensured.

The cover plate at the base of the lamp column has been removed and the wires are exposed, how soon will you attend?

Upon being made aware, we will attend within two hours to make safe

The lamp column outside my house is leaning or damaged.

Bedfordshire Highways will come out to assess the damage and then determine how urgent the job is.

Can the lighting in my street be improved?

All changes including improvement requests will be considered by Bedfordshire Highways and prioritised accordingly.
We take into account age and condition of the existing installation along with the light output. However, all considerations are budget led.

CHANGES TO STREET LIGHTING

Milton Ernest - Reduction in Street Lighting

As part of the development of the Milton Ernest Parish Plan, residents were asked for their views on street lighting. The response was that  66% of respondents  wanted to see more time-controlled street lighting and 84% wanted to see low energy street lighting; as a result of this the two Councils collaborated to introduce new lighting to meet both of these expressed wishes.

Following completion of the street lighting changes the Borough Council delivered a questionnaire to all households asking for views on the scheme. Please follow the links below to view the questionnaire sent and responses received:

The Borough Council will be using this feedback to inform the development of similar schemes within the Borough. We will also be contacting residents to discuss any outstanding design or construction issues as well as any equality or safety concerns that have been brought to our attention.
