Report Abandoned Vehicle

When you report an abandoned vehicle you will be asked for the following information:

  • Details of any damage or if the vehicle is unlocked
  • If the vehicle is taxed (if you are unsure this can be checked online via the DVLA)
  • If the vehicle has moved from or appeared at current location within the last 7 days
  • The location of vehicle. Please mention any identifiers such as shops or house numbers to enable us to easily find the vehicle
  • Registration Number (if there is one)
  • Make and model of vehicle
  • Colour of vehicle
  • Note if there are any identifying markers about the vehicle, any decoration etc

Please have as many of the above details to hand before reporting the vehicle. Without sufficient information it can be difficult to investigate.

IMPORTANT: Please do not report a vehicle unless you have good reason to think that it may have been abandoned.

  • If the vehicle is causing a parking problem but not abandoned, please contact the Parking Shop on 01234 718057 to report it as a nuisance vehicle, or email parking.shop@bedford.gov.uk.
  • If you want to report a vehicle that is causing an obstruction of the highway and is a possible safety hazard, please call the Police on their non-emergency number for North and Mid Beds: 01234 841212.

The Council will inspect any vehicle reported, but will only remove a vehicle if the Investigating Officer is satisfied that the vehicle is abandoned in accordance with set criteria. In making this decision the Investigating Officer will consider a range of factors such as the age and condition of the vehicle, whether it is in tax, and anything that indicates that the vehicle is not in regular use.
The Council will not normally remove a vehicle that is taxed and in good condition unless there is strong evidence that it has not been in use for a long time and has been left on the highway or on private land without permission of the landowner/Highways Department.
You can remain anonymous, but without your help it will be more difficult to prosecute offenders. Your personal details will be treated as confidential but it may sometimes be necessary for witnesses to give evidence in court.
