Play Areas

The borough council currently owns and maintains over 90 play
areas in Bedford and Kempston with facilities for toddlers, juniors
and teens. These include purpose-built kickabout areas for football
and basketball.
Safety is a prime concern for the council and national good
practice guidance is followed. These sites are checked regularly by
qualified staff and inspected annually by an external safety
organisation. Please bear in mind, however, that our sites are
unsupervised and parents are required to supervise their children
at all times. Dogs are not allowed in play areas – with the
exception of guide dogs. Problems can be reported on the number
shown below.
As well as council sites there are play areas in the borough owned
by other organisations. Some may belong to Housing Associations
whereas village play areas are likely to belong to the local Parish
Council. On new developments play areas generally remain the
responsibility of the developer for at least a couple of years.
Sites in the process of adoption, remain the responsibility of the
owners until the legal process is fully completed.
