Bedford Borough Council is responsible for maintaining many varied parks and green spaces from urban and country parks to small patches of green in residential areas.

Best known to visitors is the riverside promenade running through the town centre made up of the Embankment Gardens, Russell Park and Mill Meadows. The ornate Victorian Suspension Bridge across the river was opened on the same day as Bedford Park, another Victorian gem situated to the north of the town centre at the end of the imposing De Parys Avenue.
