Archbishop Trevor Huddleston

(1913 - 1998)

The Right Reverend Trevor Huddleston, KCMG. Born 15 June 1913, died 20 April 1998.

"Father Huddleston was a pillar of wisdom, humility and sacrifice to the legions of freedom fights in the darkest moments of the struggle against apartheid."

Born in Bedford – christened at St Paul’s Church, Bedford Attended Woodard Public School of Lancing and then Christ Church, Oxford

1937
Ordained after attending Wells Theological College

1939
Joined the Anglican Order of the Community of Resurrection at Mirfield

1943
Appointed as priest-in-charge of the Community’s Mission in Sophiatown, South Africa

1949
Appointed Provincial of the Community in South Africa and Superintendent of St Peter’s School

1956
Following publication of "Naught for Comfort" he was withdrawn from South Africa by the Community Superior

1959
Founded the Anti-Apartheid movement becoming President in 1981 until his death Until 1960, he worked in England based on the Community at Mirfield

1960
Elected as Bishop of Masasi, Tanzania (then South Eastern Tanganyika)

1968
Appointed Suffragon Bishop of Stepney

1978
Elected as Bishop of Mauritius and first Archbishop of the Church of the Province of the Indian Ocean

1982
Awarded the United Nation’s Gold Medal

1983
Retired to St James, Piccadilly and accepted provostship of the Anglian-Nonconformist Theological College of Selly Oak, Birmingham

1995
Returned to South Africa for a short period and spent his last years with the Community of Resurrection at Mirfield

1997
Accepted appointment as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George
