Sustainability

Sustainability is about integrating and balancing the often competing needs of economic, social and environmental issues. It involves thinking about the future, caring for the environment, using resources efficiently, improving quality of life and encouraging greater community participation.

“The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations.. “ The UK Government.

The Sustainability Team is working on making the Council more sustainable, by improving the energy efficiency of the its buildings and transport fleet using the Carbon Trust’s Local Authority Carbon Management Programme; working with schools to help them reduce their energy consumption, incorporating sustainability in its policies and strategies, and ensuring the Council can adapt to the possible impacts of climate change.

The Sustainability Team also works to improve the sustainability of residents in the Borough by promoting sustainable living through raising awareness of areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, food growing and alternative transport. The Team work with community groups to support community-led environmental action. The Team also raise awareness of the need to mitigate climate change and how to adapt to the potential effects.
