Real Nappies Information

Did you know ..... that from birth to potty training approximately one tonne of nappies per child will go into landfill if you are using disposables?

Cloth nappies - also referred to as real nappies, reusable nappies, cotton nappies or washable nappies - are easy to use, even easier to care for and very cute too! When you consider that cloth nappies are also good for the environment, better for your wallet and (most importantly) the best choice for your baby , it is really worth thinking about using them.  Modern cotton nappies are easy to use, easy to care for and attractive and stylish as well.

The cheapest option, even taking into account the cost of washing powder, energy and depreciation of the washing machine, is buying your own real nappies and washing them at home at 40 - 60oC - there is no need for a boil wash.  Alternatively there are nappy laundry services which will supply, deliver, collect and launder your baby's nappies.

So why choose real nappies?

  • it is estimated that you can save up to £500 for your first baby if you home launder washable nappies from birth to potty training, and you can use them for a second baby
  • babies using washable nappies tend to potty train 6 months earlier than those in disposables
  • in a household with a baby, up to 50% of their household rubbish could be disposables
  • every year councils in the UK spend over £40 million sending disposables nappies to landfill
  • the very first disposables are still slowly rotting away in landfill sites around Bedfordshire - the plastic in nappies can take up to 500 years to rot away completely.
