Allocations and Designations Plan
The Allocations & Designations Plan
will allocate sites to meet the Borough’s future development needs
and designate areas of land where specific policies will apply. It
has to conform to the approach set out in the Council’s Core
Strategy & Rural Issues Plan, in particular the broad
location for development and the core policies within it.
The timetable for the production of the
Allocations and Designations Plan is set out in the Local
Development Scheme.

Allocations and Designations Plan Update July 2011
At the Council's Executive on 13th July 2011, Members resolved
to split the allocation of Gypsy and Travellers sites from the
main body of the emerging Allocations and Designations Plan.
Gypsy and Traveller issues will now be considered in a separate
development document whilst the remainder of the Allocations and
Designations Plan will progress independently. Further detail about
the reasons for this decision can be found in the Executive papers
which can be viewed
here.
The Local Development Scheme has been reviewed
to take account of this change.
Additional background evidence will be gathered to inform
the single issue Gypsy and Traveller development plan document as
part of its 'Issues and Options' stage.
More detail will be posted about the Gypsy and Traveller Sites Plan on
the website when it is available. If in the meantime you have
any queries, please send these to bdf@bedford.gov.uk.
Sustainability Appraisal
In order to ensure that the Allocations and
Designations Plan contributes to the aims of sustainable
development, the Council is required to undertake a sustainability
appraisal of its policies and proposals. The purpose of the
sustainability appraisal is to promote sustainable development
through the integration of environmental, social and economic
considerations into the preparation of a DPD. A sustainability
appraisal has been undertaken at each stage of preparing the
Plan.
