Wixams
Wixams New Settlement new settlement is 3
miles (5km) south of Bedford and covers an area of approximately 384
hectares. Based upon the site of the former Elstow Storage
Depot it will eventually establish a community of around 10,000
people with the potential to expand to around 15,000. It will
represent the single largest development in the county and
straddles the border between Bedford Borough and Central
Bedfordshire.
Wixams will include a town centre and several
“villages” with 4500 homes, 25 per cent of which will be affordable
homes, employment land, schools, shops, generous landscaping and
recreational space such as sports pitches and allotments and
community buildings. The streets will be designed with safety
in mind and to facilitate ease of movement using public transport,
cycles and walking. Planning permission has recently been
approved for the new rail station located on the western edge of
the Wixams development which will provide links with Bedford and
Central London stations once completed.
Work on Village 1 on the eastern edge of the new
settlement is now underway. Lakeview Lower School
and a community centre are now complete and the construction
of 3 retail stores in Village 1 is also at an advanced stage.
Almost all the individual land parcels in
Village one now have planning permission and at the end of 2011
over 400 were occupied.
House builders currently include: - Bloor Homes,
Bryant Homes, Careys New Homes, George Wimpey, Leach Homes, Lagan
Homes and Miller Homes. Bedford Pilgrim’s Housing Association
is also present on site.
