Allocations and Designations Plan
The Allocations & Designations Plan will allocate sites to
meet the Borough’s future development needs and designate areas of
land where specific policies will apply. It has to conform to the
approach set out in the Council’s Core
Strategy & Rural Issues Plan, in particular the broad
location for development and the core policies within it.
The timetable for the production of the
Allocations and Designations Plan is set out in the Local
Development Scheme.

Earlier Stages
'Call for Sites'
A “Call for Sites” took place during July
and August 2008 where sites to be considered for potential
allocation were invited for submission.
In order to ensure that all possible sites were considered
from the outset, landowners, developers and other interested
parties were invited to propose sites for inclusion in the
Plan. All sites submitted to the Council for consideration as
development allocations are available below. Bedford and Kempston
are listed separately as are submissions for the Bedford River
Valley Park and the Forest of Marston Vale. The remainder are
grouped by Parish.
A methodology has been prepared to help with
the selection of sites for inclusion in the Allocations and
Designations Plan. This looks at whether the sites fit the spatial
strategy set out in the Core Strategy and Rural Issues Plan, do no
conflict with existing planning policies, are not technically
constrained or exceed the development requirements set out in
regional and sub-regional guidance. This methodology was prepared
following public consultation in order to appraise the relative
suitability of sites.

Responses to the consultations on these
documents are available below. As a result of this consultation,
the Site Selection Methodology were considered in detail, the

Sustainability Appraisal
In order to ensure that the Allocations and
Designations Plan contributes to the aims of sustainable
development, the Council is required to undertake a sustainability
appraisal of its policies and proposals. The purpose of the
sustainability appraisal is to promote sustainable development
through the integration of environmental, social and economic
considerations into the preparation of a DPD. A sustainability
appraisal has been undertaken at each stage of preparing the
Plan.
