School Transport

Parents and carers have a legal duty and a responsibility to ensure that their children attend school regularly and to make any necessary arrangements to ensure that they attend.

In certain circumstances Bedford Borough Council has a duty to provide free home to school transport.  We arrange school transport for children and young people in Bedford Borough who are eligible for transport in accordance with Bedford Borough Council's Transport Policies.

When considering free home to school transport, Bedford Borough Council will adhere to the statutory guidance from the Department for Education.  Local authorities are under a duty to have regard to it when carrying out their duties in relation to home to school travel and transport, and sustainable travel.

The guidance is issued under duties placed on the Secretary of State by sections 508A and 508D of the Education Act 1996 (the Act). It deals with sections 508A, 508B, 508C, 509AD, and Schedule 35B of the Act which were inserted by Part 6 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 (the EIA 2006).

These pages will provide you with information about free transport to and from school for pupils of statutory school age, as well as transport assistance for students of post 16 age.
