Music for Bedford Borough Annual Highlights
The National Festival of Music for Youth was a
great success. Our Junior Performance Choir were invited to perform
at the Fringe Festival in Birmingham and both the strings and wind
ensembles of the North Beds Youth Chamber Orchestra progressed in
the competition to the finals in Birmingham. The Wind Dectet
performed exceptionally well and was awarded one of the two top
awards for their session, the 'Performance Practice Award'.
Our new Big Band has been rehearsing hard every
Friday evening, has built up its repertoire and has now had a term
full of gigs – all being received well. Among them were great
performances at The Ent Shed and the Abbey School Closing
Celebration in the presence of the Mayor.
Our new events, the Massed Upper Schools’
Concert and the Massed Middle Schools’
Concert were great successes, with many schools
participating at The King’s House, Ampthill Road. Singing
traditional and contemporary songs (such as We Found Love in a
Hopeless Place and Kyrie Eleison from A Little Jazz Mass) and
accompanied by a live rock band, orchestral instrumentalists and
backing vocalists, these new concerts were very well received by
all schools and audiences.
The Upper Schools’ Battle of the Bands event
that was held in the spring at The Stables, Milton Keynes, was
amazing. There were 19 band entries, varying in style from heavy
rock to folk. Redborne band were well deserved winners, but the
whole event had such a feel of success about it – great atmosphere
with sponsorship from Marshalls and The Sound Garage.
North Beds Youth Chamber Orchestra. In addition
to participating in and doing so well in the National Festival of
Music for Youth, they have also held regular end of term concerts
and visited three middle schools in one day to delight children
with their music which included Mendelssohn’s Scottish
Music Hub Gala Awards Evening was held at the
Corn Exchange. This was a new event that recognised the
exceptional achievements of students, schools, music staff and
volunteers. Some of the year’s top performances were heard whilst
cups and shields were presented.
Master class series – exceptional teaching and
learning in singing, brass, percussion and strings took place this
year for gifted students who learnt advanced playing techniques and
who were inspired by professional playing at supporting concert
trips to see London Community Gospel Choir at The Stables and The
Royal Marines at The Royal Albert Hall.
Sing On. 1,500 year 3s enjoyed singing great
songs at the Corn Exchange, which this year included soloists and
elements of dance and drama. There were standing ovations form
bumper audiences on the 5 nights.
Wider Opps Play Days 1,200 year 4 pupils this
year learnt instruments for 15 weeks from scratch – most of whom
came together in the King’s Arms, Ampthill Road for one of two Play
Days (in February and July). Amazing standards were reached by
these beginners with many choosing to carry on playing. Popular
were our new instruments: pbones, clarineos(small plastic trombones
and clarinets)and ukuleles.
Teacher Demo Tours. MfBB teachers visited 30
schools and performed to thousands of children, demonstrating
instruments and encouraging take up. Schools really appreciated the
holistic approach of demonstrating all instruments together – rock,
orchestral and keyboard. Playing Bach followed by One Direction
certainly had an impact – they were great fun and very well
Instrumental Days – Fiddle Fiestas x 3, Band
Bonanza, Keyboard Capers, Guitar Fiesta, Viola Day – all involved
thousands of pupils and were enjoyed by all. Some students choose
to attend just these annual events, but many are inspired (and
able) also to attend weekly ensembles that take place in their
schools, or at the Music Centre.
Bedfordshire Music Trust Holiday Courses –
hundreds of string, brass, woodwind and percussion players joined
like-minded children from across Bedfordshire to enjoy rehearsals
and concerts. New for this year was the reforming of Bedfordshire
Youth Choir (14yrs+) and Youth Opera (14-26yrs).
Bedford Festival of Music, Speech & Drama.
Many teachers entered instrumental soloists, duets and ensembles.
Congratulations to the many who won their classes, including our
Percussion Ensemble, ‘P1’.
Saturday Morning Music Centre. With regular
classes and end of term concerts, attendees steadily rose
throughout the year. Well received were new classes in theory of
music and aural, ukulele and kindermusik (ages 3-5) and new
activities: family days, fetes and instrumental try outs.
Early Riser’s Choir has had an exceptionally
busy year flying the flag for our adult learners with many
performances, including a wonderful concert at Knutsford Hall.
