Unemployment

The Unemployment spreadsheet provides monthly data on unemployment in Bedford Borough and its 27 wards from January 2011.  Data for previous years is available from the Deprivation and Worklessness section of the Borough Statistical Profile.

In April 2013, there were 4,206 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in the Borough.  This was 4.2% of the working age population (16-64) and compares to 3.7% in England and 3.0% in the East of England.

Using the broader ILO measure of unemployment, which also includes people seeking work but ineligible for Jobseeker's Allowance, the Borough's unemployment rate over the period January 2012 - December 2012 (latest available modelled estimates) was 7.2% of the economically active population aged 16+. This compares to 7.8% in England and 6.6% in the East of England.
