Pop-Up Museum
POP OVER TO THE POP-UP MUSEUM
The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford
will be celebrating the launch of its new name and brand with a
pop-up museum event: The Thing About Me.
The show and tell will take place on the lawns off Castle Lane, on
Saturday 5th May, from 11am –
4pm.
So, if you own an item that defines you, that
you adore, that you couldn’t live without? then please bring it
along to The Higgins’ pop-up museum event!
A pop-up museum is a museum that only lasts
for one day. In order for the pop-up museum to exist, members of
the public are being asked to bring along an object that they feel
represents them. The items will then be labelled, displayed and
discussed with visitors and fellow participants. We want to
encourage everyone to share their passion with others at the pop-up
museum, and make it a day to remember.
Cllr Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for
Leisure and Culture, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “There are
no rules for a pop-up museum; the simple aim is to start
conversations with all sorts of people, about the things that
individuals cherish. It will be a fascinating event, as no-one can
know in advance what items will turn up!”
The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford,
formally known as the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford
Museum, unveiled its new name and brand in April 2012. The new name
and brand reflect the identity of The Higgins as one organisation
moving forward. The fresh, friendly approach in the brand and
programme is an indicator of what is to come when the museum
reopens in Spring 2013.
The Higgins family, the site at Castle Close,
and the development of the art gallery and museum, are linked
together. The Higgins family moved to Bedford in the 1820s;
founding the brewery at Castle Close and building the family home
next to it. In order to focus on his ambition, to found a museum
‘for the benefit, interest and education of the inhabitants of,
and visitors to Bedford’, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery opened in
1949 in the house that had been his family home. Bedford Museum
moved into the former Higgins & Sons Brewery in 1981.
