Bedford Bamberg Sports Festival
Further
information on the Sports Festival, including times and
locations
Hot on the Heels of the London 2012 Games the Bedford Bamberg
Sports Festival is set to launch onto venues across Bedford
Borough.
Teams from the two towns will be gathering together between the
22nd and 23rd September to compete and celebrate achievement and
participation in sports. This is the 9th Festival where Bedford
will host Bamberg, our twinned town. The Festival will welcome over
150 Athletes to Bedford, to participate in a wide variety of sports
including Rowing, Badminton, Shooting, Athletics, Tennis and
Football.
The Sports Festival has also received the prestigious Inspire
Programme Mark Logo. This Logo is awarded by the London 2012
Olympic Games organisers. It recognises the event as being an
exceptional project designed to create a real and lasting change
for current and future generations.
Bedford and Bamberg have been twinned for over 30 years now;
this bond has aided many shared experiences between families and
towns as a whole. It is hoped that most of the competitors will be
staying with host families, as is tradition for this event.
Councillor Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and
Culture said: “This is a fantastic event, celebrating the true
meaning of Sport. Not only does it celebrate the excellent
relationship Bedford and Bamberg have, it will allow this
relationship to grow, creating new friendships and strengthen old
bonds. It also allows us to share the vibrant community atmosphere
with our guests following the Olympic Games.”
On Saturday the 22nd of September Bedford College will be host
to sporting taster sessions at the Bedford International Athletic
Stadium, from 10am till 12pm in sports such as Football,
Basketball, tennis and athletics.
Local schools have also been getting involved with the Sporting
fever, capturing the mood of what ‘being active’ means to them.
Schools including Bedford Modern, St. Thomas More, Bedford Academy,
Bedford Girls School, Hastingsbury, Biddenham and Sharnbrook will
all have their work on display at the Bedford International
Athletic Stadium over the weekend.
