DOMESTIC ABUSE AWARENESS
MONTH
Bedfordshire Domestic Violence Partnership and soLUTiONs,
Luton’s Community Safety Partnership, have come together to promote
October as ‘Domestic Abuse Awareness Month’.
The campaign is being endorsed by former Bedford Modern student
and cricketing hero Monty Panesar, the acclaimed spin bowler who
has been called up to England’s Ashes side, said: “I was delighted
to be asked to help promote awareness of such an important
issue.
“Domestic abuse has a devastating effect on individuals and
families; people need to know that they do not have to deal with it
on their own and there is help out there.”
In England and Wales, one in four women and one in six men will
experience domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime.
Councillor Will Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety,
said: “Domestic abuse is a national and worldwide issue but we want
to make it absolutely clear there is help and advice available for
people who are suffering in Bedford.
“Domestic Abuse Awareness Month will help to highlight the
options available to people who are the victims of domestic abuse
and try to empower them to find the help they need.”
During the month Bedfordshire Domestic Violence Partnership and
soLUTiONs, with support from other local agencies, will be hosting
a range of events throughout Bedfordshire and Luton to inform
residents about this issue and also to raise funds for local
charities which support victims of domestic abuse. Details of all
events can be found on http://www.bedsdv.org.uk/
