Come Dine With Me - World Sight Day
Tuesday 26th October
2010
This year, to mark World Sight Day, people with visual
impairment took the opportunity to talk to individuals from
organisations that provide services within the Borough over a three
course meal. This was hosted by hospitality students at
Bedford College's Skyline Restaurant.
Representatives from the Job Centre, Adult Education,
Commissioner for Visual Impairment Services and Highways were
escorted to the restaurant wearing special sim-specs (glasses that
distort vision) to join the visually impaired guests. The meal
provided an ideal opportunity for the participants to chat about
what it is like having a visual impairment accessing and using
these services.
Cllr Nicky Attenborough, portfolio holder for Adults Services,
at Bedford Borough Council, said: “As a council it’s crucial that
we provide the necessary support, ensuring that services provided
enable residents with visual impairment to live fuller lives and
make a positive contribution to society. It was a perfect
opportunity for Bedford Borough Council to work in partnership with
Sight Concern Bedfordshire and Bedford College.”
Bedford College’s Head of Hospitality, Raj
Mandal, said: "We were delighted to host this Come Dine With Me
event at Bedford College, giving our students the chance to put
their culinary and hospitality skills to the test in welcoming
guests and serving lunch to people who have sight
impairment.
“Our students are learning every aspect of the
catering and hospitality industry and that includes making sure
that guests receive the best possible dining experience. At
Bedford College we have high standards and our students leave with
the all round skills they need as they start their careers.
Our Come Dine With Me guests certainly enjoyed lunch in our Skyline
Restaurant and the hospitality they received from our students and
staff."
By listening to the true life experiences, organisations are now
able to learn and ensure they consider the needs of residents
with visual impairment when planning and delivering local
services.
