Undercover Heroes: Code Name: Young Carers
Monday 8th November 2010
Borough Hall is preparing for its première
showing of Undercover Heroes on Thursday
11th November, at 3pm. The 20 minute film has been
produced by young carers in a joint project with Bedford Borough
Council, Central Bedfordshire and Moon Watcher Media.
With the average age of a young carer being
just 12-years-old, the viewing is hoped to encourage organisations,
services and projects to increase and improve support offered to
this group. The event will provide opportunity to hear directly
from the young carers themselves; the real stars of the show!
Its launch is the culmination of two years
work with the group of young carers aged 7 – 15. Commissioned in
2009 with funding from both unitary authorities, the film will be
launched to a packed audience made up of staff, invited guests,
young carers and their families.
In the film, young carers from across
Bedfordshire explore such issues as:
- Bullying
- Role and day to day life of a young carer
- Different caring scenarios including sibling disability,
parental disability, parental mental health problems
- Understanding / school support
- Comparison between young carer / non carer in relation to
social and personal development
- The film is targeted at any professional, service, volunteer
who works with children, young people and families
Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for
Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “With so
many adult responsibilities, young carers often miss out on
opportunities that other children have to play and learn. I am sure
this will be a thought-provoking film, which will help us provide
the necessary support to these outstanding young people.”
