The Smile Awards 2010
Wednesday 24th November
2010
The Smile Award takes place this Wednesday
24th November, from 10 – midday, at Borough Hall. The
ceremony is set up to acknowledge those who help to improve the
oral health of people with special needs.
A healthy mouth is an important factor in
general health and well-being. It can promote better communication,
nutrition and improved self-esteem, enabling everyone to reach
their potential in society.
The award is not a ‘one off’ but rather
recognises the year on year achievement of promoting optimum oral
health. The award runs from January to November each year.
Cllr Nicky Attenborough, portfolio holder for
Adults Services at Bedford Borough Council, said: “Poor oral health
can reduce a person’s ability to consume nutritious food, affect
self-image and cause significant pain which a person with an
impairment or a disability may not be able to communicate. It’s
crucial that these vulnerable people receive the oral care they
need in order to live a healthy and comfortable life. I
congratulate all those involved in dedicating their skills and
expertise towards ensuring the appropriate care is given to this
group. It’s a small and heart warming event that is exceptionally
important to recognise.”
Sue Jordan, Oral Health Promotion Manager, at
Bedfordshire Community Health Service said: “I am so delighted that
people are coming together to raise standards in oral health.
Without a whole team approach it would be difficult to implement
change across Bedfordshire; the participating teams are setting a
positive example of how we can all make a difference, even during
challenging times, to reduce oral health inequalities and improve
quality of life.”
The awards start again in January 2011, for
