Healthy Winter Warmers at Scott Lower School
Thursday 25th November
2010
The Mayor, Dave Hodgson, and some fun
characters, in the form of adult-sized vegetables, will be visiting
Scott Lower School’s school assembly at 10.15am, on Thursday
2nd December. The event is being organised to promote
eating well in schools with the overall message to pupils that
‘it’s cold outside, so it’s important to enjoy a hot and
healthy school dinner!’
Bedford Borough Council will be working in
partnership with the Schools’ Dietetic Service and NHS Bedfordshire
to ensure that schools across the borough will be taking part in
activities to increase their education and exposure to eating
well.
Cllr David Sawyer, portfolio holder for
Children’s Services, at Bedford Borough Council, said: “A healthy
school meal is so important for children to function well in their
day to day lives. Eating healthy foods helps concentration levels
and a child’s overall development. If we can get children to see
the benefits of healthy foods, such as hot meals full of vegetables
and vitamins rather than just a diet of ‘quick finger foods’, then
we will serve them well.”
Carol Leverkus, NHS Bedfordshire Schools’
Dietician, said: “You really can’t beat a hot school meal for
keeping warm and feeling good during cold winter days.
“Eating a well planned and balanced school
meal, even on an extra day or two a week, is not only valuable in
delivering essential brain boosting nutrients and energy for our
active kids, but the body actually generates heat as it digests the
food – again helping them to stay warm.”
