Cold Weather Updates

Unprecedented weather conditions have seen roads across Bedford Borough gritted day and night during the current sub-zero temperatures.

The borough’s gritters are on call 24/7 from October to April and have now carried out 80 priority gritting runs and used over 5,000 tons of salt on routes in urban and rural areas. Within the last 24 hours gritting runs covering over 480 kilometres have been carried out at 3pm, 8pm and 4.30am with secondary routes also covered in between these runs. Crews are also operating snow ploughs on areas where snow is drifting.

Due to the weather conditions, certain services have had to be suspended for the safety of the public and our staff. All bin collections and street cleansing have been suspended today, currently until Monday; all school transport has been cancelled today and a decision on Monday’s transport will be on Sunday afternoon, following an assessment of local conditions and forecasts. We have reallocated some staff to undertake snow clearance in the town centre.

Schools where possible will update closures on this page www.bedford.gov.uk/schoolclosures but we urge parents to check with their school for full details.

Local residents can keep up to date with the Council’s efforts to keep the borough moving by following @grittertweets. This dedicated Twitter will provides updates on road conditions and gritting runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - twitter.com/grittertweets. Information on the impact of the cold weather on a whole range of services including public transport, adult transport, schools, bin collections and gritting is also available on the Councils winter weather pages at www.bedford.gov.uk/winterupdates

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Environment, said: “We know how important it is to local residents that we do all we can to keep the borough’s roads moving. However, we still urge motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and allow extra time where they have to make journeys during the current snow and cold weather.”
