Eco-Schools
More than 50% of schools across Bedford
Borough have now signed up to the prestigious national eco-schools
programme, which involves them working to follow sustainable
principles in everyday school life. The programme has seen a flurry
of local schools achieving recognition for their commitment to
sustainability in recent months. Awards won by Bedford Borough
schools recently include:
- Elstow Lower School – were awarded their 2nd Green
Flag
- The Hills Lower School – were awarded their 1st
Green Flag
- Wilden Lower School - received ‘Bronze’ and ‘Silver’
- Brickhill Lower School - received ‘Bronze’
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Charles Royden, will visit
The Hills Lower School at 9am on Friday
10th June to attend the flag raising assembly
in celebration of the school’s participation in the Low Carbon
Schools Project within Bedford Borough.
Carol Humphreys, Assistant Head teacher at The
Hills Lower School, said: “We worked hard to achieve our Green Flag
status and we are delighted with the outcome. We planted our
vegetable beds with lots of onions, cabbage, kale and peas and
prepared our flower beds for new plants – everything is so
green!”
The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson,
said: “I’ve come across many fantastic examples from our local
schools of how the Eco-Schools programme has really enthused young
pupils, while also making a real difference in reducing schools’
impact on the environment. Congratulations to all the schools who
are in the programme and receiving well-deserved recognition, which
I hope encourages others to sign up to becoming an Eco-School.”
