The Higgins Bedford

The Higgins Bedford receives HLF grant for Voices – Different Pasts, Shared Future project

The Higgins Bedford has been awarded a grant of £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a 12 month project Voices – Different Pasts, Shared Future, which aims to record, interpret and share the heritage of refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants living in Bedford.

The project was launched in June, to coincide with Refugee Week 2017, and aims to reflect the heritage and culture of Bedford’s diverse and evolving community at The Higgins Bedford, as well as building awareness and understanding of the stories of the people who arrived here.

It includes a display featuring audio and film stories of refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants talking about their experiences and hopes for the future, and an artwork inspired by objects brought here from their countries of origin.

The funding will enable The Higgins Bedford to expand the display to feature new memories and to take the exhibition out into schools, community centres/venues and organisations, places of worship, colleges/training centres and workplaces.

Leisure and Culture Portfolio Holder Sarah-Jayne Holland said “The Voices project is fantastic and is part of the museum’s role as a cultural hub which engages and represents the diversity of heritage and culture of our local communities. I am delighted that The Higgins Bedford has secured this grant funding to both expand the project and take it on the road to different places in the Borough. I would encourage everyone to get involved with the Voices project and learn about the histories of our diverse communities.”
