Rivercare Cleans Up!
The second Rivercare event of 2011 took place last weekend ahead
of the In Bloom judging later this week.
With Anglia In Bloom judges in town to see how it measures up
against tough competition from across the Anglia region, the impact
of the clean up, the second rivercare event of the year, could hold
the balance when it comes to the awards received locally.
Organised by Bedford Borough Council’s Pride in Bedford Team,
Rivercare sees volunteers from across the Borough come together to
help clean up the River Great Ouse, litter pick the banks and the
surrounding areas.
34 volunteers came to help out on Saturday 9th July, including
regular volunteers from Viking Kayak Club and the Bedford Sub Aqua
Divers.
The haul from the river this time included; 28 bags of litter
and 20 bags of litter that can be recycled,
13 bicycles, 4 shopping trolleys, 3 road signs, a computer
chair, rubber tubing, A metal folding bed frame
a motorcycle, a chair frame, a laptop, a tea service, various
kitchen utensils - baking trays, spatula, pan lids
and pieces of wood and iron.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The Great Ouse is
something everyone in the borough can be proud of. We work hard to
keep it clean and these Rivercare events continue to go from
strength to strength because of the support we receive from
volunteers. I would personally like to thank them for their efforts
to help maintain the River as the jewel in Bedford’s
crown.”
