Explore Hidden Bedford

Residents and visitors to Bedford are in for an extra special historical treat on Saturday 23rd July when they will be invited to explore ‘Hidden Bedford’ to coincide with the Bedford Busking festival.

Hidden Bedford is an event which aims to highlight the nooks and crannies of Bedford’s history and cultural landscape with a modern twist. As well as printed material there will be the opportunity to use an app called a ‘QR code’ on a smart phone which will give a guided ‘QR code tour’. The tour is led by Gemma Hutton from the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum from 11.00am – 12.00pm, starting at the corner of Lime Street and Harpur Street.

A ‘QR code’ is a bar code that can be scanned by smart phone users with a QR code reader app. The codes allow users to access specific information on their phones. The Hidden Bedford tour will be enhanced by photographs and maps linked to QR codes around the town that relate to specific locations along the route.

Some of the streets people walk down everyday have been walked upon since Saxon times, over 1500 years ago and perhaps even before that. They have gone through many changes over the centuries – Offal Lane and Gooseditch Lane are just some of the names that have been lost. The Hidden Bedford tour will aim to enlighten participants of this ancient heritage and journey through Bedford’s past.

Councillor Doug McMurdo, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “Bedford Town Centre will be an exciting place to be this weekend with the streets brimming with music and guided tours that promote the rich heritage of our town. The QR code tour is a great 21st century twist on Bedford’s ancient past that will highlight many little known facts about the town and most of all have fun along the way.”

People wanting to join in on the digital tour do not have to own a smart phone. Individuals with smart phones will be able to share and team up with those without and the information from the tour will also be available in print.

After taking the tour don’t forget that Bedford will also be playing host to the Bedford Busking festival on the same day.

Booking is essential as guided walks around Bedford tend to be quite popular. For more information please call 01234 718618 or email gemma.hutton@bedford.gov.uk.
