'Local Plan 2035' Consultation

‘Local Plan 2035’ Consultation

22nd January- 5th March 2018

Bedford Borough Council is once again asking people for their views on the ‘Local Plan 2035’, in a public consultation that opened on 22nd January 2018 and runs for 6 weeks.

The Local Plan 2035 sets out proposals for growth and development in Bedford Borough to 2035. As well as allocations for the building of houses and flats, it also includes provision for jobs and the development of facilities such as schools, transport and shops to support new communities.

There have been several rounds of consultation about the Local Plan in recent years, which established the scope of the plan, collected evidence on options for where sustainable growth should be located, and consulted on future housing development.

This fifth public consultation, which will last for 6 weeks, invites local residents and other interested parties to comment on the Plan, before the Council considers it for formal examination.

The Council is required by Government to plan for 19,000 homes to be built by 2035. However, with allocations and permissions already in place for the majority of this number, new sites are required for just under 8,000 of these dwellings.

The focus for this housing growth continues to be urban area of Bedford and Kempston, with brownfield sites accounting for around 80% of the new homes planned in the urban area. The Plan also includes a proposal for one new settlement- Colworth Garden Village- alongside a new parkway rail station to help ease congestion on the A6, and two new access roads from the A6.

The Plan also includes a range of provisions to ensure sustainable growth including infrastructure requirements, green energy, and local employment.

Portfolio Holder Cllr Colleen Atkins said “The Local Plan 2035 sets out where growth and development will take place in the Borough over the coming years. I would encourage everyone to get involved and have your say.”

You can respond to this consultation online at www.bedford.gov.uk/localplan2035, or by completing a response form available at local libraries and the Customer Service Centre on Horne Lane.

Responses can also be emailed to planningforthefuture@bedford.gov.uk or sent by post to Local Plan 2035, Planning Policy Team, Bedford Borough Council, Borough Hall, Bedford MK42 9AP.

All responses should be made on the official form and returned by 5pm on Monday 5th March 2018.
