Friday 2nd February: Fighting Proud – LGBT History Month Launch

Saturday 17th February: OUTing the Past Festival of LGBT History at The Higgins Bedford

February is LGBT History Month, and the theme this year is Geography: Mapping the world. The Higgins Bedford is proud to be joining London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Belfast as a hub venue for the National Festival of LGBT History in 2018.

LGBT History Month launches at The Higgins Bedford on Friday 2nd February with a talk from Stephen Bourne, based on his new book Fighting Proud- The Untold Story of the Gay Men Who Served in Two World Wars. The talk takes an engaging and informative look at wartime Britain, unearthing the fascinating stories of the gay men who served in the armed forces and on the Home Front. This is a free event, and there is no need to book.

As part of the National Festival of LGBT History there are events across the country throughout the month, and on Saturday 17th February it’s Bedford’s turn. The art gallery and museum will host a day of free talks and workshops. Visitors can drop in between 11.15am and 4.30pm to discover hidden histories and stories from LGBT communities in Bedfordshire and beyond.

The Higgins Bedford has an active LGBT History Panel, first established in 2016. This year the Panel will be working to develop an interactive project on the month’s theme, looking at LGBT History across the globe and in particular at countries where homosexuality is still a crime.

Cllr Sarah- Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said “It is wonderful news that The Higgins Bedford is part of the National Festival of LGBT History, alongside major cities across the country. The LGBT History panel is growing every year, and doing great work bringing hidden histories to light.”
