LGBT Adoption and Fostering

LESBIAN, GAY, BI-SEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER (LGBT) FOSTER CARERS AND ADOPTERS - WE NEED YOU! LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week, 5 - 11 March 2018

As part of LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week, Bedford Borough Council is holding 2 events on Wednesday 7th March 2018 at Borough Hall, in Cauldwell Street, Bedford.

The first is an informal lunch-time drop-in event, from 12 – 2pm, to find out more about Fostering, no need to book, just pop in. The second is an Adoption Information Evening from 6.15 – 8.30pm for prospective adopters to come and hear more about the process of adoption.

Now in its seventh year, LGBT Adoption & Fostering Week is a national campaign encouraging more lesbian, gay, bi and trans people to consider these parenting routes. The campaign is led by charity New Family Social and brings together adoption and foster care agencies from across the country. There is an urgent need for more adopters and foster carers in the UK, with more than 7,000 new foster families needed and some 72,600 children in care in England alone in 2017.

Tor Docherty, chief executive of New Family Social, said: ‘Although 1 in 10 adoptions in 2017 were to same-sex couples in England, adoption and foster care agencies are extremely keen to talk with LGBT people who could either adopt or foster. If you’re LGBT and think adoption or fostering may be for you, there’s never been a better time to find out more.’

More adopters and foster carers are needed to provide loving, stable homes for Bedford Borough children, particularly for those children over four years old and sibling groups.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care at Bedford Borough Council, said: “We know from experience that LGBT people come to adoption and fostering with an open mind and real enthusiasm, as it’s often their first choice for growing their family. Some of our children have had a traumatic start to life, and we’ve seen them thrive with their new parents.”

“You can be single, over 40 and you don’t need to own your own home to consider foster caring or adoption. We need people with stability, love and resourcefulness who can who can help a child with whatever needs they may have.”
