Cycle mad
children at Robert Bruce Middle School in Kempston have been busy
designing a piece of art to revamp their school cycle shelter, to
encourage more of their friends to pedal the school run. The Mayor
of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, will be at the school on Thursday
11th February, from 1.20 – 1.50pm, to unveil its new look.
The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson,
said: “As a council, we are committed to creating a clean and green
borough. Our 10:10 campaign commits us to work towards reducing our
carbon footprint by 10% in 2010. If more students cycled to school
it may also encourage their parents and friends to follow their
lead.”
Sustainable transport charity, Sustrans,
commissioned Bedfordshire art student, Oliver Durcan, to paint the
design based on the Robert Bruce Middle Schools’ student’s designs
of imaginary creatures.
Richard Noon, the school’s Sustrans Bike It
Officer adds: “The children at this school are really dedicated to
cycling. They’ve had great fun designing the art work and will now
have a safe and attractive place to store their bikes. We’re all
very excited to see the completed piece of work.”
Bedford Borough Council has worked in
partnership with Sustrans for the past two and half years, since
that time the school has seen cycling levels double.
