Flood Memories
Tell Us About Flooding In Your Area
Due to recent changes in legislation, Bedford Borough now has
new responsibilities for tackling local flooding. At this
stage we are concentrating on building up
a complete picture of local flooding in Bedford Borough
and want to hear from you. We need to improve our knowledge
of local flooding in particular, surface water flooding and how it
affects communities.
Local flooding can be caused by:
- surface water from rainfall that cannot soak away into the
ground and lead to an overland flow of water,
- overflowing of smaller bodies of water such as streams or
ditches,
- groundwater, when heavy rainfall causes the water table to rise
above the surface of the ground.
This information will be used to develop a Local Flood Risk
Management Strategy to determine actions to manage the risk of
local flooding in the Borough. We will be carrying out
further consultation with residents and businesses as part of the
Strategy development later in the year.
Who can take part?
We want to hear from residents and
businesses about your experiences of local flooding,
to know when and how often the flooding has occurred and
the extent and impact of the flooding.
We are particularly interested in hearing
about surface water flooding (flooding caused by rainfall flowing
overland). The Environment Agency is responsible for managing
flood risk from main rivers which includes the Great River Ouse and
Riseley Brook, and already has records of flood events from the
main river network going back many years.
