Consultations

Getting the publics' views on a number of areas is a very important part of policy making here at Bedford Borough Council. This becomes even more vital as we become a unitary authority on April 1st 2009. This coincides with time when The Local Government and Public Health Act 2007 places a 'Duty to Involve' on all Best Value Authorities (excluding the police)

The 'duty to involve' means all councils are obliged to inform and consult with Citizens on a wide range of issues. It highlights the importance of community engagement and the importance it plays in local decision making.

Please read our Consultations Strategy document below for details on how we currently conduct our consultations. This document is due to be refreshed in 2010.

Diversity Monitoring

As part of our commitment to equality and diversity we often include diversity monitoring questions on questionnaires, recruitment forms, and other paperwork. The six strands of diversity that we recognise are gender, age, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief. Asking about these areas helps us to make sure we are communicating with all sections of the community, and to help us identify areas for improvement.
