Scott Hall Community Centre

Providing a Sustainable Future For Community Centres

Bedford Borough Council is looking at the future of the Community Centres in urban areas of Bedford and Kempston. Reductions in government funding mean that savings of £27 million have to be made from the Council’s budget, on top of £90 million already achieved. To do this the Council is looking at all the services it provides to see how it can work differently to meet these savings and best meet the needs of local residents.

In terms of the Borough’s Community Centres, proposals have been put forward for ownership and delivery of them to be transferred to community groups, local entrepreneurs or businesses independent of the Council, providing a more sustainable future. This could allow ownership and control of the Centres by people in the local community to make them even more responsive to local people.

The Council is currently working with Community Centre partners to look at how this proposal could work.  Following this, Expressions of Interest were invited and accepted from interested parties in taking on ownership of each of the six Centres.

The six Community Centres are listed below, click on links to see who has expressed an interest:

Cauldwell Community Centre, Althorpe Street, Bedford, MK42 9HF

Church Lane Community Centre, 147 Church Lane, Bedford, MK41 0PW

Faraday Community Centre, Kelvin Avenue, Bedford, MK42 9ND

Jubilation Community Centre, Moulton Avenue, Bedford, MK42 0JB

Southfields Community Centre, Southfields Road, Kempston, Bedford, MK42 7NR

Tavistock Community Centre, Princes Street, Bedford, MK40 2SX

It is planned that any changes in the operation/ownership of the Centres will take place from April 2019 when existing arrangements will end. Throughout this time there should be no change to the way that services are currently provided.

Those who have expressed an interest in receiving the Community Centres have been asked to submit formal applications by 31st January 2018.

In addition to the above Community Centres the council leases properties from the Church of England to provide the following centres:

·         Scott Hall Community Centre, Barford Avenue, Bedford, MK42 0DS

·         Queens Park Community Centre, Marlborough Road, Bedford, MK40 4LG

The Council continues to work with the Diocese of St Albans and the Parochial Church Councils regarding these two centres with a view to achieving sustainable Community Centres from 2019, at which point the council will have surrendered it’s long term leases.

The Council’s statement regarding the transfer and it’s application form, can be viewed here.
