Bedford High Street Learning Resource

Curriculum Resource for SchoolsTHI Curriculum resource image

A fun and fascinating package for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 learners, produced by educational experts, is now available. The resource uses Bedford High Street’s lively and interesting past and present as the basis for learning, with a focus on curriculum areas history, geography and citizenship. Lessons can be delivered in the classroom as well as opportunities for fact-finding visits to Bedford High Street and The Higgins Bedford. The resources can be downloaded from The Higgins Bedford’s learning area (link below)or are available on CD Rom from Nancy Falloon, Bedford Borough Council: nancy.falloon@bedford.gov.uk .

Bedford High Street Puzzler

For young and not so young history detectives!

Interested in uncovering some fascinating facts about Bedford High Street?  The Puzzler takes you on a short treasure hunt along the street, challenging your powers of observation to help you answer the puzzles. Ascentis Level 2 - Heritage Construction

Introduction to the basics of historical styles of architecture, traditional materials and the skills used in their construction. Next course starting September 2014. Assistance with fees available for local contractors.

 

NVQ Level 3 - Heritage Construction (Experienced Learners)

12 month, fully site assessed NVQ available to experienced workers looking for recognition of their heritage work, in carpentry, joinery, plastering, brickwork and painting/decorating. This qualification enables contractors to obtain the prized CSCS Heritage card, opening the doors to more specialist conservation contracts. A limited number of fee assisted places are still available - please contact Roger Lett at Bedford College on 01234 291388.

A key resource for the THI project is the Bedford High Street Heritage Gazetteer, which details the history of each property on High Street, in images and text. The Heritage Gazetteer is a wealth of information on how properties, plots and businesses have changed over time. View the Heritage Gazetteer (22.2Mb ).

 


Bedford Museum

museum high street strapThe Bedford High Street History Project was inspired by a BBC One series broadcast in the Autumn of 2010, Turn Back Time  - The High Street. This showed how shops changed radically between the Victorian era and the 1970's. The programme makers also invited members of the public to investigate and record the history of shopping in their own locality.  To find out more on what has been discovered by recent research visit the Bedford Museum's website at :
