Housing Benefit In Detail

Universal Credit: Full Service Now Available in Bedford

Universal Credit has replaced new claims for housing benefit for most working age people in Bedford Borough unless you are;

  • Of state pension age – see here for a link to see when this will happen for you.
    https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-age  ; or
  • Living in a NN29 postcode area (Podington), or PE: (Staploe and Little Barford);

  • You have three, or more children living in your household

  • or you live in “supported exemption accommodation”. This is generally a hostel or sheltered accommodation.

If you are already claiming Housing Benefit, you will remain on that benefit until your circumstances change, but if you are making a new claim, you will now have to claim Universal Credit.

You can make a claim for Universal Credit here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit

If you are in one of the groups above you can still claim Housing benefit, the amount of benefit you will get depends on:

  • Who lives with you
  • The amount of money you have coming in
  • Other benefits you receive
  • Any savings you have
