Council Tax Reduction Scheme

Find out more about the new Council Tax Reduction Scheme and how this could affect you.

Council Tax Benefit and discounts are changing

From 1 April, Council Tax Benefit will be abolished and a new council tax support scheme will replace it.

If you are affected by these changes, we have written to you to let you know.

Who can get Council Tax Support?

Anyone who has to pay Council Tax can apply for Council Tax Support.

If you currently get Council Tax Benefit, we will automatically assess you for Council Tax Support - you do not need to re-apply.

How much you will pay

You will get a bill in March, which will tell you how much you have to pay.

Support for people of pensionable age will be protected in line with our old Council Tax Benefit scheme.

How to pay

The easiest way to pay is to set up a direct debit. For details visit our How to pay your Council Tax bill page

If you think the support you are getting is wrong

If you think the calculation is wrong, you can ask us to check it again. If you still disagree after we have checked it, you can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal who will consider your appeal.

You cannot appeal to the Valuation Tribunal on the grounds that you disagree with our scheme.

If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax

If you are worried about not being able to pay, please contact us as soon as possible.
