Young people in Wootton have something to shout about on Friday 8th August 2008 at the official opening of their new youth shelter and skate ramp equipment behind Wootton village hall.

The whole project has been put together by the newly formed Wootton youth forum who sought the funding, designed the equipment and approached the parish council to seek permission to have it all installed.

The new youth shelter and skate ramp equipment is a result of the parish councils new youth imitative group, supported by Bedford Borough Council, to work with young people in the village to hive them more power and make decisions.

After running a number of consultation events a group of young people put themselves forward to form a youth forum who then applied to the youth opportunities fund and were awarded full funding for a youth shelter and skate ramp equipment.

Richard Denton from Bedford Borough Council’s Community Welfare Team said,

“We are all aware that sometimes it is challenging trying to accommodate the diverse needs of younger and older residents in the community so it’s a real achievement getting this equipment for Wootton as everyone has had to work together.

The young people of Wootton have taken complete ownership of this project and it has been their sheer hard work and determination that they have been so successful

Young people in rural areas are often invisible when it comes to service providers. We work hard with a number of young people in rural locations to ensure that their voices are heard and that they get the same opportunities as their urban counterparts”

The youth shelter and skate ramp equipment will be officially opened by members of the youth forum at 3pm.
