Winter Maintenance
Salting and GrittingA salting network of roads has been devised such that roads carrying the highest amount of traffic and with the highest risk of accidents are treated. This means that just under half the road network in the County is salted. Bedford Borough Council acts as an agent for Bedfordshire County Council and looks after winter maintenance in Bedford, Kempston, Elstow, Bromham and Biddenham.
All A and B roads are salted along with important local roads. We also try to ensure that the majority of road users live within a reasonable distance of a salted road. In prolonged adverse weather conditions, additional roads may be treated, but only when the normal salting network is relatively clear of ice and snow. In any case, in the event of snow, roads will be cleared according to their priority.

Remember! Despite all of our efforts, winter conditions will still make roads treacherous even if they have been treated. Make sure you are aware of the conditions, reduce speeds and drive with caution.
