Education in Bedford

The Borough of Bedford has an extremely high reputation for the quality and range of its educational facilities. It is probably unique in having four major public schools within its boundaries operating alongside the state education system. Bedfordshire Education Service The excellent local state schools are based on a three-tier system, with Lower Schools (ages five to nine), Middle Schools (ages nine to thirteen) and Upper Schools (ages thirteen to eighteen). This required a substantial building program in the 1980's allowing many children to enjoy the advantages of modern purpose-built accommodation. There has also been a large increase in the number of nursery places.
Children attending schools in the Borough enjoy all the facilities provided by the state education system. There are two residential centres for environmental studies at Dell Farm, Whipsnade, and at Netherswell Manor in the Cotswolds, while there is also an outdoor pursuits centre in North Wales.

Children are allocated to schools in the area in which they live, but there is a choice of school for parents who wish to enrol their children outside this area. There are also Roman Catholic lower, middle and upper schools in Bedford.

The Harpur Trust
The four Harpur Trust schools (Bedford School and Bedford Modern School for boys and Bedford High School and Dame Alice Harpur School for girls) command an enviable reputation regionally and nationally, and those with boarding facilities accommodate children from many parts of the World. These schools between them provide the education for some 4,300 pupils aged seven to 18.  The schools offer Harpur Bursaries financed from the Trust's endowment income. Bursary awards are available to pupils entering the Senior Schools.  Awards take into account the academic ability of the applicant and the family income.
