Unauthorised Encampments Within the Bedford Borough Area

Do you wish to enquire about unauthorised travellers' encampments?  If so, please read the section below entitled "What the Council Does".  If you then wish to report the encampment to this Council, please complete the online form providing details of the encampment.  Alternatively, you can telephone the Council's Hotline on 01234 267422.

What the Council Does

It can provide advice

If the Council owns or occupies the land upon which the travellers are encamped, the Council will make arrangements, at its own cost, for travellers to be removed as soon as practicable.  As part of the legal process, the Council will have regard to the statutory requirements, including those relating to Human Rights; legal authorities; and Government guidance.  Therefore, the removal of the travellers may take some days.
If travellers are on privately owned or occupied land, the Council has no legal powers to remove them, nor can it compel the owner/occupier of the land to take action.  However, if the owner/occupier of the land authorises the Council to take action to remove the travellers, the Council is able to offer a removal service, but in this case the Council makes a charge to cover its costs and expenses and those of its contractors.

To notify the Council of a Travellers' Encampment, please click here and complete an online form.
