About the North Bedfordshire Community Safety Partnership

Bedford Borough Council works closely with statutory agencies including the police, fire and rescue service, health service, probation, County Council, local business, voluntary organisations and local communities to "provide and promote a safe environment for people who live in, work in or visit North Bedfordshire by reducing crime, the negative impact of anti-social behaviour, fear of crime and drugs"

The Partnership is active and and successful but not complacent.  This is shown in many ways including the following:

  • Crime reduction targets for North Bedfordshire Community Safety Partnership were set by the Government Office for the Eastern Region to reduce crime by 20% by April 2008 from the level in 2003/04.  The Partnership is on target to achieve this reduction. The Partnership has achieved a 10% reduction to date and is on target to achieve 20% by April 2008
  • Crime is going down especially in the categories of burglary and vehicle crime
  • Close work with Bedfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (B:DAT) and the Drug Intervention Programme (DIP).  These teams work to ensure that there are treatment services for all people who have a drug and/or alcohol use problem and wish to gain help.  The number of people entering treatment in Bedfordsihre has risen by 21% in 2006-07
  • 300 vulnerable homes will have been fitted with extra security measures this year
  • Just over 100 CCTV cameras are monitoring public places to make people feel safer and provide assistance in reducing crime
  • Bedford Borough Council Environmental Street, Park and Street Ranger Services received 4 awards last year for delivering high standard services that contribute to creating safe environments
  • Bedford Pilgrims Housing Association have jointly funded 4 Street Rangers
  • Bedford Borough Council with other partners have jointly funded 13 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) this year
  • Safer Neighbourhood Plans are being delivered in 5 areas of the Borough and will be extended after April 2007
  • Four Bedford car parks have achieved national recognition for their safety and security features this year by obtaining a Park Mark Secure Parking Award.  The car parks are inspected annually to ensure they maintain these high standards.  Car parks include Elstow Park and Ride, Lurke Street, River Street and Queen's Street multi-storey parks.

The Partnership delivers its services to our communities through a number of groups that work both within Bedford Borough Council or Bedfordshire County Council.
