Sustainable Development

Bedford Borough Council is committed to building a better quality of life for everyone within the Borough.  As part of this commitment, the Council sees sustainable development as key to the whole process of ensuring a healthy environment, vibrant economy and social justice for all, for now, and for generations to come.

Sustainable development is ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (Brundtland, 1987). It seeks to achieve a better quality of life for everyone, now and in the future, while protecting and where possible enhancing the environment. It requires an integrated approach to deliver social progress and economic growth and maintain the quality of our natural environment.

In 1998, the UK Government developed a list of characteristics showing what a ‘sustainable society’ would look like.  These characteristics covered social, economic and environmental sustainability.  In March 2005 the Government published its revised Sustainable Development Strategy: Securing the Future, which sets out how the Government intends to deliver sustainable development in the UK.

Bedford Borough Council has been attempting to create a sustainable society through the creation and delivery of a Borough-wide Local Agenda 21 Action Plan and a Sustainable Development Action Plan which covers all Sections within the Council.
