Standards Committee

The Standards Committee has 11 Members in total, comprising:

5 Members of Bedford Borough Council
3 Parish Council Representatives, formally appointed by the Borough Council following their election by Parish Councils in the Borough
3 Independent Members, formally appointed by the Borough Council following their selection by and independent, external panel comprising representatives from the North Bedfordshire Council for Voluntary Service, Churches together in Bedford, Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and the Chamber of Commerce.

The Parish Council Representatives and the Independent Members of this Committee are known as “co-opted members” of the Council as they have not been directly elected.

Having had responsibility for recommending the adoption of the Council’s Code of Conduct for Members, the Standards Committee’s work now focuses on the following responsibilities for both Borough and Parish Councils and Councillors in its area:

  • To promote and maintain high standards of conduct by Members/co-opted Members
  • To assist Members/co-opted Members to observe the Code of Conduct
  • To monitor the operation of the Code of Conduct
  • To advise, train or ensure that training is arranged for Members on matters relating to the Code of Conduct
  • To grant dispensations to Members and/or co-opted Members from specific requirements in the code of conduct relating to interests
  • To deal with any matters referred to it by the Council’s Monitoring Officer or by an Ethical Standards
