More than 60 people joined the Pride in Bedford team for the first River Care Clean-Up of the year at the Sea Cadet Hut, on Longholme Way, last Saturday.
Litter pickers along the banks were supported by Viking Kayak Club and The Environment Agency who took to the water to ensure a clean sweep of Bedford’s river frontage took place. Overall it was the highest ever turnout for a rivercare event with many benefiting from the sunny sky and warm temperatures.
In total 61 bags of litter were removed from in and around the river. Items pulled from the river included a wheelchair, 3 trolleys, 3 wheels, and a 4 life rings. Along the river banks bulky items included 2 wooden pallets, an ironing board, and a kitchen worktop.
After the clean-up children were invited to create their own inventions from rubbish that been previously collected. The winning creation featured a bird feeder made from a discarded egg box. The creations will be on show in the Town Hall reception along with a display of the photos taken at the event.
Community Partnerships Officer Deborah O’Regan says: “Our Rivercare and Community Clean-Ups are always sociable events and the first event of the year didn’t let us down. We were helped out by the weather and the biggest turnout yet for a river care event. Together we collected 61 bags of rubbish as well as an assortment of bulky items including a wheel chair and four life rings! This will really make a difference to the river and its habitat creating a more enjoyable environment for us all to enjoy.”
Pride In Bedford clean-ups take place throughout the year, with clean-ups happening across the Borough every Saturday. For more details about these events contact Community Partnerships Officer Deborah O’Regan on 01234 221638 or email prideinbedford@bedford.gov.uk
