Play Areas

Westbourne Gardens play area from the air
The borough council currently owns and maintains approximately 80 play areas in Bedford and Kempston with facilities for toddlers, juniors and teens. These include purpose-built kickabout areas for football and basketball.

Safety is a prime concern for the council and national good practice guidance is followed. These sites are checked regularly by qualified staff and inspected annually by an external safety organisation. Please bear in mind, however, that our sites are unsupervised and parents are required to supervise their children at all times. Dogs are not allowed in play areas – with the exception of guide dogs and problems can be reported on the number shown below.

As well as council sites there are play areas in the borough owned by other organisations. Some may belong to Housing Associations whereas village play areas are likely to belong to the local Parish Council. On new developments play areas remain the responsibility of the developer for at least a couple of years even if the owners have applied to the council for adoption of the site.

All borough council sites have signs with a phone number to ring in case of problems with the equipment or site. There is now a new freephone number that you can use to report problems with council owned play areas: 0800 121 888.
