Bedford Borough Council has been short listed as a finalist for one of the most prestigious awards in the Local Government calendar.

The Municipal Journal Achievement Awards celebrate success and provide national recognition for improvement in local government. This year Bedford Borough Council has been named as one of only 6 finalists in the ‘Best Achieving Council of the Year’ category. Bedford is one of only two district councils to have been short listed with the other authorities being larger Metropolitan and London Boroughs. While Bedford has already seen off competition from councils from around the country the council must wait until 26 June to find out if it is the overall winner.

Reaching the finals highlights the outstanding year that Bedford Borough Council has enjoyed. With major achievements including being rated as Excellent by the Audit Commission; receiving a score of 4 (out of 4) for Value for Money; being awarded Unitary Status by the Government as well as many more service based awards, it has been a remarkable year.

Bedford Borough Council’s Chief Executive Shaun Field said:

“Our place amongst the finalists is clear recognition of the outstanding achievement the authority, its members and staff have made in the past year. Bedford Borough Council doesn’t normally submit applications for awards of this nature, preferring to focus on delivering services, so to be short listed as a finalist for the one award we did apply for was a great commendation.”
