Mice
Mice can be a problem if they are found within buildings. They are wild animals often to be found in gardens and the countryside. However, they will do damage, eat food and may spread disease if allowed to remain within houses or food premises.
You can minimise the possibility of infestation by mice by taking a few simple precautions:
- Ensure all food is kept in cupboards above floor level, preferably in closed containers.
- From time to time, clean under cupboards and appliances including behind the
cooker and fridge.
- Seal any small holes that may allow access from the outside, for example around
pipes.
- Put all waste food straight into a dustbin.
- Store pet food in containers.
- Remove any items which may be used as nesting material.
The Pest Control Officer can visit residential premises to offer advice and to treat the infestation. He will lay baits in locations which are not easily accessible to pests and children, and tell you where they are. He will also advise you of practical steps you can take to help, and to prevent a recurrence. The treatment will depend on the nature and extent of the problem. A charge will be made for this service.
Proprietors of commercial or food premises must make arrangements with a private contractor to guard against infestation, and to treat any which occur. The most important control measures are to ensure that food and waste are inaccessible and to keep the premises clean and in good structural condition.
