Fridge and Freezer Recycling

As of 1 January 2002, EU Regulations have meant that all ozone depleting substances must be removed from refrigeration equipment before they are scrapped. For fridges and freezers this refers to CFCs and HCFCs. These gases were used in the cooling system of fridges and freezers as the refrigerant and as part of the insulating foam.

Fridges and freezers manufactured after 1994 are unlikely to contain CFCs. However, HCFCs continue to be used as part of the insulating foam. The average lifespan of a domestic fridge is 10 -15 years, so the majority of fridges and freezers currently nearing the end of their useful life will require treatment.

How do I dispose of a fridge or freezer?

To dispose of your fridge/freezer you can either take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Barkers Lane, or you can contact Bedford Borough Council who will arrange a special collection.

Bedford Borough Council will also collect your fridge/freezer for a £27 charge. Simply call 0800 121 8888 to arrange a collection, or print off our bulky waste collection request form online by clicking following link:
