Pilot initiatives for the Elections on 3 May 2007

This May Bedford Borough Council will pilot several initiatives to engage more people in the Democratic process.

These are:

Electronic Counting; An Early Voting Opportunity; Signing for the Ballot Paper, and amending the Mayoral ballot paper to a single column where voters enter a 1 for their first choice candidate and a 2 for their second choice.

Bedford Borough Council is committed to encouraging all sectors of the community to vote. This includes those who have become disillusioned by the political process who should still be able to voice their opinion and exercise their democratic right. By offering voters flexibility in where they can vote and a more coherent ballot paper we hope to remove some of the obstacles that currently keep turnout low. We are also fully aware that we need to move with the times, and that new technology introduces more ways in which voting and counting can be innovative and credible. Through the Electronic Counting solution we are hoping to see an improvement in the efficiency of counting and offer information to the public by providing progress reports for counts.

Many arguments can be brought forward about why voters stay away form polling stations, but all would agree that by increasing turnout citizens would gain a more representative government. We want to change perceptions, and show people that their vote can make a difference. Of course this won’t be easy, and much hard work and publicity awaits, but it’s important we encourage this using all the tools and methods available.

What are your views? We would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on this issue, and offer any further information regarding the pilot schemes.
