Discretionary Housing Payments
Discretionary Housing Payments
From 2nd July 2001, you can apply for a discretionary housing payment if you need further financial assistance to help meet your rent or council tax liability, provided that you are already entitled to some Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit. A discretionary housing payment can be requested for any reason that makes it difficult for you to meet your rent or Council Tax bill.
Discretionary housing payments are paid from a cash-limited budget allocated to the Council by the Secretary of State. Because of the limited amount of money available, there is no guarantee that all applications will be successful. For this reason, the Council will usually give preference to applications where there are exceptional circumstances.
